This looks to be a free web security class that includes video lessons, guides, and resources. I honestly had never heard of Hacker101 until strupo mentioned it. That said, there are a few more directed approaches, so hopefully, I can cover them here. If you want to get started, just download VirtualBox, grab an “easier” VM from VulnHub, and get started! Other than capture the flag events, vulnerable machines or labs are a great way to learn some ethical hacking tools and techniques. Hacking to learn and learning to hack is fun, but you want to make sure that you do it legally!
